All in the Family was Thomas Harris’s meditative and reflexive look at three African-American families though the eyes of their lesbian and gay siblings. In contrast to traditional documentaries which invest all artistic authorship into the hands of the director, All in the Family placed the camera in the hands of its subjects in order to construct a collective autobiographical representation of their story. The resulting film interwove conversations, documentary footage, dramatic portrayals, experimental reenactments, visual abstraction, and archival photographs to present a poignant portrait of three contemporary American families.
