For Gesture as Value, an international project encouraging cultural exchange as a social value, artist Jerelyn Hanrahan asked artists and organizations from ten countries–Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States–to contribute small drawings, paintings, texts, or quotations on paper the size of an American dollar. These “gestures” then became part of a public installation via the medium of ATM machines in Bern, Switzerland, Toronto, Canada, and New York, N.Y. Hanrahan chose to display the exhibition on ATM machine screens as a means of minimizing international borders and suggesting the monetary values that underpin cultural exchange. A comprehensive exhibit of all entries was on view at the Galerie Francesca Pia in Bern and the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn.
