JOIN US FOR THE OPENING OF KARA WALKER’S INCREDIBLE PROJECT! THIS SATURDAY, MAY 10, FROM 12 – 6 P.M. AT THE DOMINO SUGAR FACTORY
Have you heard the news? For her collaboration with Creative Time—and her biggest public project ever—Kara Walker has created a four-story-high sphinx-like woman, coated in sugar and holding court deep within the abandoned Domino Sugar factory. Come see her for yourself this weekend: Our public opening is Saturday May 10, noon to 6!
Read more about Kara’s work in this New York Times preview, which describes it as “a sight so unlikely it seems Photoshopped.”
GET INVOLVED WITH #KARAWALKERDOMINO
We promise: when you set foot inside Kara’s installation, you won’t be able to resist filling your iPhone and flooding your social networks with snaps of the artwork. With our crowdsourced “Digital Sugar Baby,” we’re taking it one step further and bringing the work into the digital realm. All images tagged with #KaraWalkerDomino on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are going to be mapped into a 3D version of the sculpture. Join in!
Presented in collaboration with Makeable.
CREATIVE TIME REPORTS: SUGAR SERIES
From May 5 through 9, Creative Time Reports will publish a series of illustrations and texts on the theme of sugar, created by five writers and artists who bring a diversity of perspectives to the topic and react to Kara Walker’s Creative Time project. Contributors include novelist Edwidge Danticat, poet Tracy K. Smith, writer and performer Shailja Patel, poet and novelist Jean-Euphèle Milcé, and illustrator Ricardo Cortés.
COLLECT YOUR OWN KARA WALKER
In addition to her first sculptures ever, Kara has also designed a limited-edition porcelain pitcher in collaboration with Bernardaud and LizWorks. Through the end of today, half of all proceeds are generously donated to Creative Time—and at just $350, these pitchers are the ultimate collector’s item!
