At the Brooklyn Anchorage, artist Leo Villareal presents Firmament, a ceiling mounted light sculpture that consists of 64 strobe lights arranged in 4 concentric rings. These lights, sequenced with a microcontroller, produce hypnotic animated patterns that simultaneously suggest twinkling stars and bursts of encoded information. Villareal provides a radial couch on which viewers can recline in a zero-gravity position and observe the lights above. Firmament explores the thresholds of perception and the dissolving boundaries between the synthetic and the organic.
