Getting there: 6 train to Hunts Point Ave
Once you arrive at 1391 Lafayette Ave: enter through the metal door. Walk diagonally to the right across the open space, towards a small brick building with a green shed.
Your key will unlock: the rusted metal door in the brick house.

Hands down my favorite location to visit thus far (and I don’t have many left so I’m thinking it might be my favorite, period). Not as close to the train as you think (and again, these Bronx locales with the hills!) There’s a much better appreciation for it if you’re an artist or are just plain feeling creative. :]
I had to make a few tries and nearly gave up on trying to get the lock open. Also, since I am cautious and didn’t know whether this was one of those doors that locked automatically when shut, I looked for something to prop it open before venturing in and exploring the studio (I left a wedge of wood most likely intended for this purpose just inside the door). The nearby Riverside park is very nice and worth a visit!
This is by far my favorite place. My friends and I spent a whole 2 hours there writing comments to some of the things that were already written on the wall. We also left an unfinished rainbow for others to finish coloring it.
Came all the way from Staten Island to check out this place and unfortunately, we couldn’t find a way in! We saw the little building through the gates and no one was around to help. We bumped into another pair who also could not figure a way in
I wish I could’ve seen what was inside, especially after a long trip…
To Jenny,
We want to apologize for your not being able to get in. It looks like you tried to come on a Saturday. We figured out after we published the hours that the site is not automatically open on Saturdays and we are working on the logistics of that. Feel free to call me at 917-822-4853 if you want to come again. I will MAKE SURE you get in and treat you to lunch at the THE POINT Cafe near by.
I was in Staten Island recently eating dinner overlooking the harbor and a SI Yankees game. It was the best!
Best,
Carey Clark
i love this spot, we spent 3 hours there, then we got LOCKED IN!!! when we came out the studio we could not leave the area because of a locked outer gate, we had to clim out(which was fun), have fun leave before they locked you in…
A bit of a schlep but the best place I had visited, by far.
Be creative! Bring bug repellent!

Loved this site. Don’t miss the wonderful park next door and stop in at Rock the Boat, an amazing non-profit in the adjacent space.
Dear Key to the City folk.
We are open on LABOR DAY 12pm – 5pm. Call me, Carey, to get into the outer door. I will be just around the corner. 1-917-822-4853.
We hope you all will continue to come as we have opted to stay open with some of the other sites after Labor Day
