Boys & Girls High School
Boys and Girls High School, the oldest public high school in Brooklyn, is a comprehensive high school in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. Prominent alumni include Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, Lena Horne, and jazz pianist Randy Weston. The school features an outstanding collection of artworks commissioned in 1975 for the current location at 1700 Fulton Street.
Bethel Tabernacle AME Church
As one of the first established African Methodist Episcopal Churches in Brooklyn, Bethel Tabernacle has been important not only as a house of worship, but for also embodying the meaning of Weeksville, the 19th Century community which was founded by a group of black freedmen. Although the cornerstone reads 1847 there is evidence that the Church was organized originally in 1818.
Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium
Founded in 1999, Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC) is an amalgam of patrons, entertainment venues, faith based institutions, community organizations and musicians committed to the development of audiences and the nurturing of institutions and individuals throughout Brooklyn that specifically deal with Jazz as well as other African American cultural expressions. Over the past fifteen years CBJC has presented an annual spring festival, established a Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame & Museum ™ and produced yearly programs that feature local jazz talent. CBJC is a nonprofit corporation committed to preserving, promoting and supporting live music within the underserved communities of Brooklyn.
Stuyvesant Mansion
Built in 1914 by architects Henry P. Kirby & John J. Petit. The building was eventually bought by the family of Dr. Josephine English (1920-2011)—one of the first black, female OB/GYN doctors in New York State. It became a senior center that was photographed by Dinanda Nooney in 1978 and most recently a community center and intergenerational hub of artists, educators, activists, entrepreneurs, and youth of all socioeconomic backgrounds.
