Benjamin Netanyahu, head of the Likud party, narrowly emerged as the winner of Tuesday’s national election, with 31 seats for his Likud-Beitenu alliance. The veteran prime minister’s victory, however, was bittersweet; his party lost several seats to the newly formed Yesh Atid (“There is a Future”) party, created by television star and political newcomer Yair Lapid. Yesh Atid will take the second-largest proportion of the 120 seats in the Knesset (as of today, either 18 or 19), followed by the center-left Labor party (17). Although Netanyahu is almost certainly set to enter his third term as prime minister leading a right-wing coalition, the shape of the next government remains unclear while the number of seats is being counted.
Udi Aloni, best known for his film Forgiveness, expresses both concern and support for four of Israel’s 32 parties, which together received only 12 or 13 seats, but in his opinion lead a way forward to “bi-nationalism and a state for all of its citizens from the river to the sea.” In the piece below, written just before Aloni cast his ballot, the filmmaker addresses three distinct factions dear to him: the Mizrahim (Middle Eastern Jews), Palestinian activists and feminists (in particular, his mother).

שלושה הרהורים על אוניברסליות ופוליטיקה של זהות
מחרתיים מתקיימות הבחירות בישראל כאשר נראה שזו כרוניקה של ימין קיצוני ידוע מראש מול גל גזענות יהודי מתלהם חילוני ודתי עומד השמאל והמרכז חסר אונים ומתפתל בתוך ריטוריקה של עצמו. מתוך הפסימיות הנוראה השורה עלינו ישנה קרן אור שבו השמאל הרדיקלי יכול להגדיר את עצמו מחדש. ארבעת המפלגות המרתקות והרלוונטיות הן מרצ המייצגת את השמאל הציוני השפוי שמנסה לייצר לעצמו רלוונטיות חדשה מתוך התבוסה האידאולוגית הברורה שהוא נחל בקרב השיח היהודי. חדש ששנים נאבקת על שיח יהודי ערבי משותף ושוחה נגד הזרם גם של השמאל הציוני וגם של הלאומיות הערבית. דעם מפלגת פועלים המנסה להסית את סדר היום הציבורי ממאבק לאומי למאבק מעמדי. ובל”ד שהיא מפלגה לאומית פלסטינית. במאמר קצר זה אנסה להלמה אני שמאמין גדול בדו לאומיות ובמדינת כול אזרחיה מהים ועד הנהר בוחר לתמוך במפלגה לאומית פלסטינית

אני אוהב את אנשי דעם ואת אנשי מרצ אבל כמו שהשמאל הציוני בשם האווניברסליות הכחיש את המאבק המזרחי , כך דעם עלולה להפוך לעיר מקלט למי שרוצה לאהוב אחוות עמים אך להכחיש את הפלסטיני. בארבע השנים הקרובות מתוכננת נכבה זוחלת כלפי הפלסטיני משני צידי הקו הירוק. השילוב של הסטת הדיון מהמאבק הפלסטיני, יחד עם ההתקפות על חנין זעובי והמשט מדאיגות אותי. מי כמוך יודע ולימד שהדרך לאוניברסלי חייבת לעבור דרך המאבק על זהות שיוויונית. העוצמה של איחוד הזהות הפלסטינית משני צידי הקו הירוק היא היחידה המאיימת על ההגמוניה היהודית והיחידה שיכולה להציע מרחב שיוויוני שבה גם המזרחי לא יהיה כפוף לאיחוד מתחנף עם האירופאי.
אי אפשר לשלול שיח לאומי במקום שלאום אחד מתפקד לחלוטין כלאום הגמוני והומוגני והלאום השני מרוסק על ידי הראשון . לומר בו לא נדבר על לאומיות , זה לומר אני מחזק את הלאומנות היהודית הישראלית הדורסנית, בקיצור בדוק אם ההצבעה לערביה לא משמשת לך אפשרות להכחיש את הפלסטינית. ואם לא הצבע מה שלבך אומר, כי אחוז החסימה הוא לא טיעון למי שלא מאמין בדמוקרטיה אתנית, אני יודע שדע”ם ומרצ מרגישות בית להרבה יהודים משמאל וזה אחלה וחשוב, אישית לא מתאים לי להרגיש בבית כשהפלסטיני כבר 65 שנה שוכן באוהלי 48.

הקריאה שלך מבאבאלשמס להחרים את הבחירות ריגשה אותי. לדעתי היום בוא נצטרך להחרים את הבחירות ולהחזיר את מפתחות הכיבוש לממשלה קרוב, אבל זו חייבת להיות פעולה מסיבית ובעלת משמעות מהפכנית ולא נטישה שקטה. דווקא כי אנו לא מאמינים בדמוקרטיה היהודית , חייבים לייצר במה עם חסינות פרלמנטרית, שחנין זעובי וחבריה יכלו לדבר מעליה לעולם, כדי להפעיל לחץ בין לאומי במאבק באפרטהייד ולפעול כמנוף לחיזוק הזהות הפלסטינית , אני מציע שנצביע בל״ד, לא כדי להיות חלק מהדמוקרטיה היהודית אלא כמנגנון שמסמן מי היא ההנהגה הפלסטינית שתפעל להפעיל לחץ עולמי להפוך את ״הדמוקרטיה היהודית״ לדמוקרטיה רדיקלית פלסטינית-יהודית מהנהר ועד הים

גדלתי בביתה של אמא (שולמית אלוני) שהנהיגה את השמאל הציוני במשך שנים למחוזות של זכויות אדם וזכויות אישה שאיש לפניה לא חלם עליהם. היא שילמה מחיר כבד כשהיתה צריכה לפלס את דרכה בפוליטיקה בתוך חבורות של שוביניסטים וגנרלים כאשר איומים על חייה ועל חיינו היו עיניין שבשגרה, אולם לעולם היא לא ידעה מורא ופחד במאבקה לצדק ולדמוקרטיה , כשאני רואה את מאבקה ודרכה הפוליטית של חנין זעובי בשנים האחרונות, אני מרגיש את אותה עוצמה ולהט לצדק. אני תומך בחנין זעובי כי בעיני היא המייצגת הכי מדוייקת של עוצמה פלסטינית ופמיניסטית

In Israel, elections approach like a Chronicle of an Extreme Right Foretold, where, against a wave of secular and religious Jewish racism, the left and center stand helpless and twisting in their own rhetoric. But through the terrible cloud of pessimism shines a ray of light in which the radical left can define itself anew. Four relevant political parties merit our consideration: Meretz, which represents the sane Zionist Left’s attempt to reestablish its relevance after the clear ideological defeat it has suffered in the battle for Jewish discourse; Hadash, which for years has struggled for a common Jewish-Arab discourse and swum against the currents of both the Zionist Left and Arab Nationalists; Da’am, a workers’ party, which has yet to garner the votes necessary for a Knesset seat as it tries to divert the public agenda from a national struggle to a class struggle; and Balad, a Palestinian national party. In these three musings, I will try to explain how it is that I, a big believer in bi-nationalism and a state for all of its citizens from the river to the sea, have chosen to support a Palestinian national party.
The Jewish Musing
To Mizrahi author Yossi Sucari
I like the people of Da’am and Meretz. Yet just as the Zionist Left, in the name of universalism, denies the struggle of Mizrahim (Middle Eastern Jews), Da’am might become the refuge of those who would love the brotherhood of nations but deny the Palestinians theirs. The coming four years foretell a creeping naqba (disaster) for Palestinians from both sides of the Green Line. The diversion of discourse away from the Palestinian struggle, combined with widespread attacks on Haneen Zoabi (a Member of Knesset representing the Balad party) and the Gaza flotilla, concern me. Who better than you knows – and indeed taught – that the road to universalism must coincide with the struggle for equity. The effort to unify a Palestinian identity on both sides of the Green Line is the only one that threatens Jewish homogeny and the only one that can level the playing field for the Mizrahim. You can’t ignore a discourse on nationalism in a place where one nation exercises its ethnic hegemony at the expense of another nation. To say, “Let’s not talk about nationalism,” is to essentially say, “I support Israel’s crushing Jewish nationalism.” In short, vote with your heart, but examine whether or not a vote for Asma Agbarieh-Zahalka (leader of Da’am), manifests itself as a way to dismiss the Palestinian national movement. A person who does not believe in an ethnic democracy must do more with their vote than simply help a new party cross the threshold and enter the Knesset.
I know that many Jews on the left feel at home with Meretz and Da’am, and that is all well and good, but personally I don’t feel right feeling at home while Palestinians have for 65 years felt as though they are still living in the tents of 1948.

To Palestinian activist Rami Yunis
Your call from the Palestinian protest outpost at Bab-al-Shams to boycott the elections moved me. I think the day we boycott the elections and end the occupation might be near, but it will need to be a massive revolutionary action, not simply a quiet abandonment. Because we don’t believe in the idea of a Jewish democracy, we must create a soapbox from which Haneen Zoabi and her colleagues can speak out with parliamentary immunity; we must apply international pressure as a lever to strengthen Palestinian identity and fight apartheid. I suggest that we vote Balad, not to participate in the Jewish democracy, but rather to vote for those among the Palestinian leadership who will use global pressure to turn the “Jewish democracy” into a “Palestinian-Jewish democracy” from the river to the sea.
The Personal Feminist Musing
To my mother
I was raised in the home of my mother, Shulamit Aloni, who led the Zionist Left for the realms of human rights and women’s rights when no one before her had dreamed of them. She paid a heavy price. Forced to pave her way in politics through a boy’s club of chauvinists and generals, when threats to her life and our lives were commonplace. She never knew fear in her struggle for justice and democracy. When I watch the struggle and political path of Haneen Zoabi these past years, I feel the same intensity and passion for justice. I support Haneen Zoabi because to my eyes she most accurately represents the Palestinian and feminist effort, and therefore I vote Balad.
