Christoph Gielen is a German-born photographer who specializes in aerial studies of urban development in its relation to land use, exploring the intersection of art and environmental politics. Excerpts of Gielen’s work and feature articles about him have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, CNN World, Metropolis Magazine, Cabinet, Lapham’s Quarterly, the Journal of the American Planning Association and Bernard Tschumi’s Architecture Concepts: Red is Not a Color (New York: Rizzoli, 2012). He is the author of Ciphers (Berlin: Jovis Verlag, 2013). He has been a speaker at the BMW Guggenheim Lab, the Congress for the New Urbanism and TEDxMidAtlantic. Gielen is a recipient of grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism and the Aaron Siskind Foundation. His pictures were nominated for the REAL Photography Award by the Dutch ING Bank Initiative and the Center Santa Fe Prize for Photography.
