Despite widespread community protests, how is it possible that Washington, DC could lose its most venerable cultural institution– after serving the Nation’s capital for 145 years? With the remains of the Corcoran now transferred to the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University, it’s time to step back and take stock of what happened and draw larger lessons about the legacies, meanings and values that cultural institutions bring to contemporary cities– and specifically how can we create a thriving ecosystem for D.C.’s contemporary art community?
