CONNECTING WITH NATIVE PLANTS, THE BIO-DIVERSITY OF CHANGE

Led by key members of the Love the Everglades movement, which aims to empower people and provide outlets to protect the Everglades and natural resources, this workshop will introduce participants to the Native Plants of South Florida, and briefly discuss the ecosystems of those plant communities. This session will focus on the applicability of native plants and will discuss how native plants have the ability to bring people together and bring about powerful changes. Participants will experience getting to know some of Miami’s local plants in an interactive, and fun way to leave participants encouraged, motivated and inspired to care for the plants around you.

 

Houston Cypress, is an artist, activist, and ordained minister and serves as the head of Love the Everglades, an organization devoted to the development of platforms and initiatives for environmental protection and cultural preservation. Cypress also uses his platform to speak out as an advocate for two-spirited and non-binary gender peoples’, cultural preservation, business development, and sovereignty. Cypress acts as a cultural ambassador, fostering meaningful exchanges between his society of native clans and the Miami community. Recently he has presented at ICA Miami a lecture entitled “Decolonizing Gender, Land, and Spirit,” seeking to connection with the environment and to cultivate more diverse and inclusive communities.
 
Jean Sarmiento is creator of SunKeeper Solutions and co-founder of the Love the Everglades Movement. Along with Houston Cypress, they have become a creative force in the realm of Environmental Advocacy. SunKeeper Solutions is dedicated to the health of the planet through implementing Artistic strategies to solve Environmental problems. They specialize in Native Plants and Habitat Restoration – from Native landscapes in people’s’ homes to major remediation work within Wetlands.
