This session will look at the exhibition “Felice Grodin: Invasive Species” as a point of departure for a discussion on how technology can be used as a tool to explore alternative narratives. The project employs augmented reality to create an imagined digital habitat. Inspired by Miami’s climate struggles, “Invasive Species” highlights the transformative and unstable state of our ecosystem, speculating about a not‐so‐distant future affected by climate change and overtaken by uncanny creatures. After the tour, the group will engage in an immersive discussion to examine ways in which we, as artists and creators, can push the boundaries of technology to engage with activism and bring awareness to our climate realities.

This session requires a smartphone and to download the free PAMM app ahead of time, ipads will also be available for those without a compatible device. Please note this session requires some walking in and around the museum. Please meet Felice and Jennifer in the Museum Lobby.

Felice Grodin is an artist whose practice focuses on the speculative by developing strategies for modeling our present conditions and making meaningful imprints upon them. She is currently featured in the exhibition Felice Grodin: Invasive Species on view at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), curated by Jennifer Inacio. In addition, she is a member of the collaborative A.S.T. (Alliance of the Southern Triangle), an initiative exploring how artistic and cultural possibilities can be reimagined in light of climate change and political volatility by leveraging the dynamics already in process.

Jennifer Inacio is Assistant Curator at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), where she curated the film series Black Audio Film Collective at PAMM (2017); the museum’s first Augmented Reality exhibition Felice Grodin: Invasive Species (2017–18); and Sid Grossman: Photography, Politics, and the Ethical Image (2018); among others.
