Paraphrasing TJ Demos, the arts industry contributes to the problem of global warming by virtue of its own carbon footprint, the impact of transporting artworks and maintaining the exhibition spaces’ climate-controlled and printing catalogues, among many other things. This workshop presents practical tools to help cultural practitioners rethink and re-envision their own practice in sustainable ways. In addition to sharing examples from exhibition spaces throughout the world, resources will be provided for participants to incorporate at their own organizations. The lecture will open up to a round table discussion to invite participants to contribute new ideas and discuss how institutional resistance may challenge efforts for change.

Susan Caraballo is an independent curator, producer, arts manager, leader and advocate in the Miami arts scene working in both its performing and visual arts communities for over 20 years. After serving as Artistic Director at ArtCenter/South Florida, Susan began to focus on environmental and social conditions within her curatorial and consulting practice resulting in projects in Miami, Havana and Salt Lake City.

Blanca de la Torre served as Chief Curator at ARTIUM, the Contemporary Museum of the Basque Country, Spain (2009-2014) in addition to have curated exhibitions internationally in Bogota, London, Madrid, Mexico City, New York, among others. Blanca’s curatorial approach is closely related to eco-aesthetics and she recognizes art as an instrument of knowledge, through which other possibilities of commonality and more sustainable strategies can be rethought and reformulated to relate to specific context.
