Initially receiving her PhD in English and literature from the University of California, San Diego, writer and professor Carol Becker has become a leading cultural commentator on issues ranging from feminist theory, American cultural history, the education of artists, art, and social responsibility to South African art and politics. Her Thinking in Place: Art, Action, and Cultural Production (2004) comprises a collection of her essays reflecting on the connections between history, memory, and creativity as she travels to Venice, Vietnam, and other sites around the world. Becker
is currently Dean of the School of the Arts at Columbia University and has led the expansion of public programs and allocation of university resources toward stronger ties with Columbia’s local community in Harlem.
