To individually experience food—to not only eat, digest, and thereby subsist on it, but also to procure, recommend, cook, share, and produce it—is to necessarily involve oneself in a web of productive, cultural, and political relations. To think about food, then, is to necessarily think about the various “spheres” of human experience—the individualistic sphere; the cultural sphere; the economic sphere; the political sphere—and consider their scope and boundaries, autonomy, causal relations, and relative weight.

Join Brooklyn Institute for Social Research faculty members for dinner and a discussion on the intersection of food, aesthetics, and politics. Your dinner hosts will be serving vegan, vegetarian, and meat-based options, catered by a beloved Jackson Heights restaurant.
