SOWING SEEDS FOR SURVIVAL:
LAUREN OLAMINA & THE TRUTH
ABOUT THE END OF THE WORLD IN
OCTAVIA E. BUTLER’S PARABLE OF THE SOWER

Hosted by Black Magic Afrofuturism Book Club & Moon Mother Apothecary

CREATIVE TIME CONFERENCE ROOM, 59 E 4TH ST, FLOOR 6, NEW YORK, NY

Note: The venue is accessible via elevator and stairs. This is a seated dinner.

As the world burns to the ground in Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower, we witness protagonist Lauren Oya Olamina confront the apocalypse with courage, community, and the practical knowledge she’s gleaned from her father’s old books.

As opposed to the more popular survival tactic of denial, Lauren prepares to step into the chaos by sharpening her tools, studying self-defense, and farming the region’s native plants to face the literal and figurative fires at her doorstep.

The dinner conversation will center on Lauren’s ability to extract truth from the lies about the end of the world and her intentional choice, at the age of seventeen, to prepare for all she could and could not imagine. Your hosts will serve each course with an excerpt from Lauren’s “Earthseed: Books of the Living” as conversation prompts. Your chef Ana María Agüero Jahannes will incorporate foods woven throughout Parable of the Sower, including those Lauren utilizes as the founding crops for her community of Acorn.

Black Magic Afrofuturism Book Club is a collective of futurists, envisioning and creating other possible futures.

Moon Mother Apothecary, founded by AfroDominican herbalist, artist, and community organizer Suhaly Bautista-Carolina, is a platform to honor and uplift heart-centered, moon-powered medicines created in the traditional wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors.

Summit X Dinners are only open to Summit attendees and require advance registration and an additional ticket. All dinners are $20 to attend.
