Head of Storytelling
Creative Time, New York City’s veteran and vanguard public arts presenter, seeks a Head of Storytelling to help shape and drive the organization’s public-facing communication. This position is responsible for ensuring clarity of voice and language across all departments. The Head of Storytelling will work collaboratively with the Executive team, Head of Programming, Curator, and Head of Development to establish engaging, responsive, and informative texts in support of our mission and programmatic vision. They will approach digital space as a site for exhibition and innovation, with the understanding that digital space is public space. The Head of Storytelling will focus on accessible language and the synthesizing of information with a commitment to working collaboratively and multitasking across various projects and initiatives simultaneously. The ideal candidate approaches writing as an art form, has a great eye for design, and has the courage to try things that have never been tried before.
—Translates leadership vision into accessible and timely language
—Stewards collaborative dialogue across departments
—Trains team members on institutional messaging
—Supports leadership in using a narrative that connects the organization’s past, present, and future
—Tailors messaging to different audiences and strategic goals
—Stays abreast of the most current use of language and terminology
Administration and Management
—Acts as the main copywriter and editor for the institution’s external-facing print and digital text, as well as overseeing the approval process. This includes project signage and text, web text, promotional e-blasts, and social media copy
—Creates and maintains the External Affairs’ communications calendar
—Follows editorial guidelines and ensures accuracy, usability, and a consistent institutional voice
—Oversees all Creative Time publications
—Acts as the primary contact with the external press team
—Manages the Graphic Designer, Communications Coordinator, and Video Fellow
Marketing and Communications
—Develops project communication timelines, assets, copy, and data deliverables to ensure successful implementation of campaigns against deadlines and objectives
—Collaborates with the Graphic Designer on assets aligned with brand and graphic identity
—Works closely with colleagues in External Affairs to develop user journeys and key messaging supporting audience and fundraising development strategies
—Works with the Programming team to ensure optimal content creation and visibility for projects
—Guides the Communications Coordinator in executing integrated digital communications and content strategy
—Develops engaging and accurate content for social media and targeted email communications—including copywriting/editing, gathering assets, and routing materials for internal review
Requirements: This position requires a self-directed go-getter who can communicate the organization’s mission from a variety of perspectives. We’re looking for a brilliant writer and innovative thinker who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and works well under pressure. This person should come to the organization with a proven track record of working in the digital realm as per the below:
—Five years of writing, editorial, or communications experience
—Excellent organizational and communication skills
—Excellent writing and copyediting
—Experience managing multiple, varied projects simultaneously
—Possesses a passion for storytelling, narrative structure, and design
—Possesses a deeply authentic approach to linking the personal and the professional
—Maintains a high level of attention to detail and a careful, confident, and precise working style
—Maintains a strong interest in contemporary art, popular culture, and social justice issues, with a good sense of humor
Salary: Commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, permanent, staff position with full health benefits available upon hire.
