The debut of Art on the Beach, an on-going public sculpture series in Lower Manhattan, occurred on a sandy landfill slated to become a housing complex for this once underdeveloped section of Manhattan. The two-acre site provided artists with freedom to expand previous work, to test ideas, and with access to the inspirational atmosphere of the Hudson River and the opposing Manhattan skyline. The thirteen artworks selected were separated into three categories; those that dealt with social commentary, those concerned with the natural environment, and those that were reminiscent of dwellings.
