History of the Site

"The building which Dr. Seuss's CAT IN THE HAT has been painted was constructed in the 1880s as a schoolhouse, with the prestigious firm of McKim, Mead & White as architects. In 1908, as a residential 42nd Street was becoming part of the city's new rialto, the former school was converted into New York's first theme restaurant, Murray's Roman Gardens.

"The architect Henri Erkins created an exotic atmosphere enhanced with suspended mirrors. Gardens, atriums, temples and fountains shared the space with Roman galleys, Egyptian peacocks and Lybian tigers. The upstairs hotel contained 24 luxurious apartments-with private bathrooms! But when Prohibition forced the closing of the establishemnt, Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus moved in and paved the way for 42nd Street's sideshow atmosphere." ("A 42nd Street Building with Oh, What a Past," Valerian A. Ginter of Manahttan-Letter to the Editor, The New York Times.)
