Juliana Beasley was born in 1967 in Philadelphia. After graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1990, she began working as a freelance photographer, covering New York City nightlife for The Village Voice. Her four-year project on exotic dancers culminated in the book Lapdancer (PowerHouse Books, 2003), an intimate photographic and text account of the world of strip clubs.
Beasley is the winner of various awards including the PX3 Human Condition Awards and the Camera Club of New York. In 2007, she was nominated for the prestigious International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Awards. In 2009, she won two grants, the Aaron Siskind Award and the New Jersey Council of the Arts. Her work is a permanent part of the photography collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Le Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium.
In 2010, her second monograph, Sete 2010, Juliana Beasley, a collection of portraits taken during a residency in the south of France was published with Images En Maoeuvres. Her work is represented by Contact Press Images.
