The Heidelberg Project is an open-air art environment in the heart of Detroit’s East Side. Over the Project's 27-year history, founder and artistic director Tyree Guyton has used everyday, discarded items to transform a two-block area of homes into an immersive, participatory and evolving installation that represents an urban neighborhood's active resistance to its own decay and obsolescence.

By offering a forum for ideas, a resource for youth education and the encouragement to seek unorthodox solutions, the Heidelberg Project has become an anchor in its community and is recognized around the world as a demonstration of the power of creativity to transform lives. The Project's mission is to inspire people to appreciate and use artistic expression to enrich their lives and to improve the social and economic health of their greater community. Its leaders' belief is that a community can redevelop and sustain itself, from the inside out, by embracing its diverse cultures and artistic attributes as the essential building blocks for a fulfilling and economically viable way of life.
