Athi Mongezeleli Joja, Gugulective

Gugulective, which grew out of a desire for artistic and intellectual exchange outside of the mainstream, includes writers, critics, filmmakers, painters, photographers, and performance artists. In providing a space for ideas and art, it hopes to incite interaction and social change within disadvantaged communities. Founded in 2006, Gugulective has curated exhibitions in Kwa-Mlamli, the local shebeen (a place that sells liquor without a license) in Gugulethu, Cape Town, and at Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg. It has also participated in a number of group shows, including From Pierneef to Gugulective and Dada South, South African National Gallery, Iziko Museums, Cape Town; US, Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg; Subvision Festival, Hamburg, Germany; and Arte InVisible, Madrid, Spain. Gugulective member Athi Mongezeleli Joja is a critic and MFA student at Wits University in Johannesburg. He is currently a visiting lecturer at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, and the editor of New Frank Talk: Critical Essays on the Black Condition. His writing has appeared in such international publications as Chimurenga, Savvy, The Postcolonialist, and The Feminist Wire. He contributes art criticism to the Mail & Guardian, Contemporary And, and The Con.
