Jill Magid

For Jill Magid, power is not a remote condition to contest but something to manipulate, exploit, engage in dialogue, infiltrate, and repeat the logic of. In her conceptually rigorous, performance-based practice, Magid seeks to engage institutions of power on an intimate level. For The Evidence Locker (2013), she used Liverpool’s CCTV control stations to collect footage of herself as seen on surveillance cameras throughout the city, then presented the compilation of videos at the 2004 Liverpool Biennial, thus creating a portrait of the relationship between herself, the police, and the city. Magid’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Tate Modern, London (2009), Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2010), Berkeley Museum of Art, California (2011), and many others. Her work transgresses our understandings of art’s boundaries as she establishes herself as a trailblazer in the global art scene.
