Monument Lab is an independent national public art and history studio based in Philadelphia, working with artists, students, activists, municipal agencies, and cultural institutions on exploratory approaches to public engagement and collective memory. In this session, founders Paul Farber and Ken Lum will be joined by a collaborator from their latest exhibition project, A Call to Peace, with co-organizer Salamishah Tillet of New Arts Justice at Express Newark and artistic collaborator, Jamel Shabazz. They will discuss interventions and tactics in the monumental landscape, swirling questions about representation and voice, and individual approaches to critical conversations around the past, present, and future of monuments.

Paul Farber is the Artistic Director and Senior Curator of Monument Lab. A historian and curator from Philadelphia, Farber teaches courses in Fine Arts and Urban Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Farber’s research explores transnational urban history, cultural memory, and creative approaches to civic engagement.

Ken Lum is the Chief Curatorial Advisor for Monument Lab, and Chair of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design. Known for his conceptual and representational art in a number of media, Lum is also a prolific writer with numerous published articles, catalogue essays, and juried papers.

Salamishah Tillet is the Founding Faculty Director of the New Arts Justice Initiative at Express Newark and Co-Founder of A Long Walk Home. A scholar, activist, and media personality, she is a leading thinker on the politics of artistic expression and the relationship between art and social justice.

Jamel Shabazz is a documentary photographer and featured artist in A Call to Peace. His goal to contribute to the preservation of world history and culture has led him to over two dozen solo exhibitions. His volunteer work inspires young people in the fields of photography and social responsibility.
