Summit X Dinner Session

7:30PM – 9:30PM

MEAL OF MIGRATION

Hosted by Emily Chow Bluck

MAGNUM FOUNDATION, 59 E 4TH ST, FLOOR 7 WEST, NEW YORK, NY

Note: This is a seated dinner. Dietary needs can be accommodated if communicated by Friday, November 1. This venue is accessed via an elevator and is ADA accessible.

Convening to digest the edible legacy of invasion—in both socio-political and ecological terms—attendees are encouraged to share and reflect on their own experiences with migration and displacement over the course of the meal. Your host will be serving a home-cooked dinner (accommodating vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and omnivore diets alike), wherein every dish centers non-native, “invasive” species as ingredients of choice.

Structured as a dinner party, the meal will begin with an acknowledgment of the Indigenous lands upon which the meal will be shared followed by informal, family-style, communal eating. Throughout the meal, information on the immigrant origins of the foods and discussion cues provided about non-human migrations will become the impetus for lively conversation about their parallel realities with human “invasion,” migration, diversity, displacement, and more.

Emily Chow Bluck is an artist, educator, and organizer working primarily with communities of color in urban neighborhoods. Her art praxis has often employed food as a vehicle for fostering dialogue, building community around narratives of overcoming, social value, and self-determined futures.
