From an installation of sounds collected from the Brooklyn Bridge to telescopes that reveal messages inscribed on the City skyline, the artworks in Creative Time's summer exhibition, Consuming Places, span virtual and physical realms and social realms and connect our City's historic character with the ephemeral nature of new technologies. The exhibition's architects, artists and designers have created works responding to the overlap between public and private spheres and reflecting on how communities of users shape networks.

Consuming Places was conceived for Creative Time's nineteenth season in the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, which is unavailable this summer due to national security concerns. We were thrilled, however, to evolve the exhibition for a majestic block between Water Street and the DUMBO waterfront, situated between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges at the entrance of the newly renovated Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. Exhibition participants were specifically commissioned to activate three remarkable nineteenth century structures - the Tobacco Warehouse, Empire Stores and the Stable at 16 Main Street. Consuming Places continues Creative Times's thirty-year mission of invigorating New York City's unusual public spaces with fresh artistic visions.
