Paul Ramírez Jonas’s art explores the potential between artist and audience, artwork and public. Many of Ramírez Jonas’s projects use pre-existing texts, models or materials to prompt actions, re-enact situations and reinsert himself into his own audience. He has had solo exhibitions in art spaces including Alexander Gray Gallery (NYC) and Postmasters Gallery (NYC); the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut; The Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas; Ikon Gallery (UK); Cornerhouse (UK); and Roger Björkholmen (Sweden). He has been included in group exhibitions at P.S.1 (NYC) and The New Musem (NYC), the Gallery for Contemporary Art Leipzig (Germany), Whitechapel (UK), the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Ireland), Künstlerhaus (Austria) and Kunsthaus Zurich (Switzerland). He has participated in the Johannesburg Biennale, the Seoul Biennial, the Shanghai Biennial, the 28th Sao Paulo Biennial and the 53rd Venice Biennale.
Ramírez Jonas is a professor at Hunter College, and has previously taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Cal Arts, Columbia University, New York University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from RISD (1989) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University (1987). His honors include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, ArtMatters, the Howard Foundation, the International Studio Program in Sweden and the Atlantic Center for the Arts, among others. He has built permanent projects in Cambridge, MA, and a permanent public sculpture for New York City’s Hudson River Park. In 2010, Creative Time presented his “Key to the City” project in New York.
