Between Dreams and History:
The Making of Shimon Attie's Public Art Projects
A documentary film by Christopher Beaver
Christopher Beaver, an Emmy-award winning producer and director, has created a half-hour documentary on Shimon Attie with collaborator, Judy Irving, and cinematographer, Skip Blumberg. Between Dreams and History: The Making of Shimon Attie's Public Art Projects follows the artist's process as he works on his first American public art project. The documentary traces Attie's process, gathering memories in multi-cultural interviews, selecting sites for his projections, and working out the technical details. Several of Attie's European projects are included-among them pieces completed in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Berlin. During the presentation of Between Dreams and History, the documentary will be shown in neighborhood businesses, from bodegas to beauty salons, (see map, page 7). It also will be included in Attie's traveling retrospective launching in 1999 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Biography
Christopher Beaver has won an Emmy for the film, Dark Circle and was the executive producer and curator of Nagasaki Journey. Beaver recently directed the world premiere of Picturing Dorothy, a play about the life of Dorothea Lange.
