Wunmi

Live Performance with Keys, Bass, Drums & Percussion (Masters At Work, Soul Jazz, King Street Sounds, African Songs)

Wunmi is a performer, singer, songwriter and fashion designer whose live sets are world-renowned. After stints with Soul II Soul, Wunmi embarked on a solo career that has led her to work with such artists as Roy Ayers, Louis Vega, Ornette Coleman, and Vernon Reid. Most recently, she played alongside Femi Kuti in the Celebrate Brooklyn! series in Prospect Park and was featured in the Masters At Work release, Tribute to Fela.

DJ Set with Live Instrumentation (Yoruba Records, Soul Jazz Records)

Osunlade is both a musician and an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa who runs the African-influenced spiritual house music label, Yoruba Records. He began recording in 1987 with Patti Labelle and has worked with Eric Benet and India Arie. He has collaborated with Wunmi for his Soul Jazz Records album and even created music for Sesame Street. For the performance, Osunlade will DJ with live instrumental accompaniment by several musicians.

Live Traditional African Drum & Dance Performances

Asae Yaa, whose name means "Mother Earth," is a group of New York-based African-American dancers and drummers who will perform two traditional dance pieces. The first, 'Abaja,' is an Ivory Coast court presentation dance; the second, 'Koukou,? is a Guinean celebration rhythm. Asae Yaa's drum troupe, which will perform both with dancers and solo, is lead by 20-year veteran African master drummer, Yao Ababio.

Kai Fikentscher is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Ramapo College and author of the book You Better Work! Underground Dance Music in New York City (Wesleyan, 2000), which traces the history of New York house music and the relationship between music and dance in African American culture. Kai also produces an ongoing monthly series called "House 2 Learn" on the history of house music.
