Amar Kanwar Wins 2014 Leonore Annenberg Prize
June 15th, 2014
We are thrilled to announce New Delhi-based artist Amar Kanwar as the winner of the 2014 Leonore Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change—selected from 250 open-call nominations! Generously supported by board member Elizabeth K. Sorensen, this annual prize is given to one artist whose work provokes awareness of and engagement with critical issues of our time, working to advance the causes of equity and justice. Kanwar is known for his complex films on critical socio-political issues, and will use his prize earnings—$25,000!—to advance his latest project, The Sovereign Forest.
He will officially receive his prize on November 15 at the 2014 Creative Time Summit Stockholm: A Collaboration with Public Art Agency Sweden. Thanks to a new partnership with The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, the artist will also have the opportunity to convene his “dream list” of thought leaders, policy experts, activists, and others prior to the Summit for a discussion of the issues at the heart of his work, the results of which they will share on the Summit stage. Congratulations, Amar!
