About the Project
All in the Family was Thomas Harris’s meditative and reflexive look at three African-American families though the eyes of their lesbian and gay siblings. In contrast to traditional documentaries, which invest all artistic authorship into the hands of the director, All in the Family placed the camera in the hands of its subjects, so as to construct a collective autobiographical story.
The resulting film interwove conversations, documentary footage, dramatic portrayals, experimental reenactments, visual abstraction, and archival photographs in order to present a poignant portrait of contemporary American families.
