RISA PUNO: INAUGURAL OPEN CALL EMERGING ARTIST
Launched in 2019, the inaugural Emerging Artist Open Call received 632 proposals throughout New York City’s Metropolitan area. After much deliberation, the Creative Time staff, in collaboration with a jury comprised of artists, curators, and community members, selected Risa Puno as the winner. A sculptor and installation artist, Puno uses interactivity and play to understand how we relate to one another. Often taking a whimsical form, her work creates accessible spaces to explore universal human conundrums.
For the inaugural Emerging Artist Open Call commission, Puno created The Privilege of Escape, her largest and most ambitious installation to date. Referencing escape rooms—immersive environments where groups solve a series of hands-on puzzles against the clock—the project used the context of a thrilling game to unpack privilege and social inequity.
