Creative Time, New York City’s veteran and vanguard public arts presenter, seeks a full time Artist Project Manager to support a new fellowship program that supports New York City based artists working towards social change in public art. This initiative is born from Creative Time’s experience of nearly 50 years at the intersection of art and social justice. Specifically, this new grant-funded fellowship program continues the organization’s investment in the research and development of innovative and impactful public art projects. The fellowship is focused on interdisciplinary research, without production requirements, that meaningfully advances a significant public art project. The ideal candidate will be a connector of people, excellent researcher, self-starter, and creative spirit who enjoys quick problem solving, keeping ideas, timelines, and people organized, and is adaptable with a flexible disposition.
 
The Artist Research Manager will work with a dynamic team on the ideation and realization of a new fellowship program including liaising with artists, developing curricula, implementing fellowship programs, printed matter, documentation, and evaluation. The Artist Research Manager will work with the team to identify and realize opportunities to amplify the work of the artists, increase thought leadership in the field through public programs, convenings, conferences, research, and writing. This involves collaboration with artists, practitioners, cultural producers, cultural organizers, and a range of organizational partners and thought leaders. The role requires knowledge of socially engaged art and includes project management, administration, curatorial research, written didactic materials, and public speaking engagements. The role reports to the Curator and works collaboratively with the Curatorial team and Operations team.
 
Project Management and Curatorial Responsibilities:

● Gain in-depth knowledge of the practices, current projects, and themes of each fellow

● Research and connect with relevant thought leaders to initiate and facilitate interdisciplinary research collaborations for artists

● Maintain a database of thought leaders in fields relevant to the artists’ work

● In collaboration with Curator, create and implement cohort-wide year-long program consisting of lectures, conversations, workshops, gatherings, and a publication

● In collaboration with Curator, maintain regular contact with artists and create bespoke engagement plans for each artist. Schedules meetings, tracks notes and actions, facilitates next steps and communication with artists and funders.

● In collaboration with the Curator, develop evaluation methods to learn from cohort and stakeholders, propose changes in real time and in the long-term

● With the Curator, orchestrates artist fellowships, onboarding, supporting initiatives and needs, and providing administrative support for fellows

● Fosters community of fellows by facilitating welcoming, accessible programs focused around the exchange of ideas, food, and shared space

● Design and implement public programs on socially engaged art in CTHQ, Creative Time’s new programming space

● Work with Curatorial team to facilitate fellows’ use of CTHQ

● In collaboration with the Curator and Communications team, builds partnerships with program and media entities to enhance program visibility

● Conducts curatorial research on relevant artists, programs, and contemporary and historical social movements globally

● Researches current global movements and networks of socially engaged art and the broader field to pinpoint timely and relevant areas for collaboration, connection, and thought leadership

● Represents the organization at relevant public-facing community events and workshops

● Ability to work nights and weekends as needed, subject to programming calendar
 
Administrative Responsibilities:

● Handle administrative duties including arranging agreements, payments, scheduling meetings, travel, managing timelines, and event coordination as needed

● Coordinate hybrid in-person and remote programs from ideation to setup to breakdown and follow through

● Coordinates and tracks external meetings with artists and stakeholders

● Create materials to update funders regularly

● Maintains and proposes allocations for fellowship budget

● Works cross departmentally with communications and programming teams to develop materials to promote and support programs
 
Qualifications and Requirements:

● 2-4 years work experience in a similar capacity. Direct experience with artist fellowship programs or curriculum building for artists is strongly preferred

● Knowledgeable and deeply committed to socially engaged art, public art, and community engagement

● Commitment to accuracy and detail with the ability to maintain a calm and composed presence through fast-paced work days;

● Comfortable working independently and collaboratively

● The ability to exercise keen judgment and discretion with artists, board members, donors, partners and the public.

● Excellent writing skills, proven grasp of grammar and expression

● Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, Dropbox, and Google Workspace
 
Compensation:
$58,500-65,000 based on qualifications and experience.
 
This is a two-year, full-time exempt position that is grant funded. A comprehensive benefits package is available (includes Paid Time Off, Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance, a 403B plan, and more). As it is grant-funded, the duration is limited to the length of the funding period.
