Welcome to River Years, a Black Gotham Experience, written and narrated by Kamau Ware. This recording is an audio walk commissioned by Creative Time and Governors Island Arts that will guide you to Moving Chains by Charles Gaines on Governors Island, the second chapter in the public art series The American Manifest.
A couple things to note before we begin. Governors Island is a 172 acre island in New York Harbor. This island has served varying purposes to the inhabitants of this region. We will cover some of that history along our path. There will be site markers that correspond to this walk that will help you along the way.
You will receive prompts of things to pay attention to within and outside of your bodies while moving along the western edge of the island. Please be mindful of others on your journey. Last and not least, this audio walk consists of five chapters. If you need to pause or relisten to sections, you are encouraged to do so. Enjoy your walk.
