2013 Artist Sandcastle Winners: Plinths, Rafts, and White Castles

August 13th, 2013

This year’s judges—Waris Ahluwalia, Klaus Biesenbach, Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, and Dana Farouki—had a tough time choosing among all of the fabulous designs that the 2013 artists produced last Friday in Rockaway! In the end, first prize—a ‘gold’ shovel, a bucket with a bottle of booze, and a $500 check—went to Jamie Isenstein for her project entitled “Disappearing Sculptures,” which consisted of bubbles, ice, and a live saxophonist positioned atop three plinths of sand. Second prize (a ‘silver’ shovel and bucket of booze) went to Esperanza Mayobre for “Raft de la Esperanza,” a beautiful, intricately sculpted raft that provided an oblique commentary on immigration, and third prize (a ‘bronze’ shovel and booze) was given to Duke Riley for “White Castle,” his replication of a White Castle drive-through, complete with actual White Castle sponsorship and free burgers!
