Creative Time is thrilled to announce our next major public art commission, If you hear something, free something by Chloë Bass, presented in partnership with MTA Arts & Design.
In a monumental but fleeting gesture, Bass takes over the New York City Transit’s PA system with If you hear something, free something, a series of 24 poetic announcements that build a practice of everyday care and question the usual purposes of public address within a system that serves millions of New York City residents daily, spanning every single neighborhood and social boundary. The announcements – in English, Spanish, Arabic, Bangla, Haitian Kreyòl, Mandarin, and ASL – will play intermittently in a dozen subway stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx from September 3 to October 5, 2025. This is the first innovative artist project on the MTA broadcast system.
If you hear something, free something launches with a new, live performance composed by Bass, featuring ten performers scattered throughout the Fulton Center atrium. To attend the performance, please enter at the street level of Fulton and Broadway. The performance will take place in the atrium at the bottom of the escalator inside Fulton Center on September 3rd at 12pm and will run for no longer than 30 minutes.
