About the Project

In recognition of the ever-worsening AIDS crisis, the second Day Without Art (DWA) coincided with the World Health Organization’s third annual AIDS Awareness Day. DWA was established in 1989 by the organization Visual AIDS as the national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis.

In 1997, the name of the annual event was changed to Day With(out) Art, so as to simultaneously recognize and celebrate the achievements and lives of colleagues and friends who continue to work in the arts and AIDS activism.
