ABOUT GUADALUPE MARAVILLA
Guadalupe Maravilla combines sculpture, painting, performative acts and installation in a transdisciplinary practice grounded in activism and healing. His autobiographical work draws on his unaccompanied migration from San Salvador to the United States and his experience with cancer, exploring relationships among migration, trauma and the body. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and his MFA from Hunter College in New York.
Maravilla’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid; Tate in London; and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, among others. He has presented solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Socrates Sculpture Park, REDCAT and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, among others.
His work is included in In Minor Keys, the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia by Koyo Kouoh, through November 22, 2026. His solo exhibition Medicine Monster is on view at the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, through November 21, 2026.
