In August 2012, Creative Time decamped to Far Rockaway, Queens to host its inaugural artist sandcastle competition. Artists including Ricci Albenda, Jen Catron & Paul Outlaw, Jen DeNike, William Lamson, Marie Lorenz, Mary Mattingly, Ryan McNamara, Kenya (Robinson), Tom Sachs, Shelter Serra, Snarkitecture, Lauren Wass and Amit Greenberg, and Dustin Yellin gathered on the beach beneath the 86th Street Boardwalk on Rockaway Beach in Queens to battle it out for special prizes from esteemed judges Robin Cembalest, Kyle DeWoody, Meredith Johnson, Anne Pasternak, Duke Riley, Walter Robinson, and Nato Thompson. Local food vendor favorites were onsite to keep artists and audiences alike well provisioned with summer snacks and refreshments, and later in the evening we moved the party from the beach to the boardwalk for burgers and beer at Rippers, featuring tunes by DJ iDEATH.
