Summit 2024

For Creative Time’s 50th anniversary, the Summit returns to New York City, where the convening started 15 years ago, and asks, how does emergency produce revolution? For the 11th edition, States of Emergence: Land After Property and Catastrophe is organized in response to the unprecedented global protests against imperialism and a United States presidential election that many are calling a breaking point of democracy. The Summit confronts our era of crisis—the climate crisis, migrant crisis, constitutional crisis, affordability crisis, housing crisis, and on and on—not as singular moments in time but rather as a long historical arch set forth by the making and remaking of colonial borders. States of Emergence: Land, Property, and Catastrophe presents new and reactivated forms of socially engaged art and political organizing that have emerged from an ongoing state of emergency and offers paths forward to working with and against governments, industry, and others in power toward land-based restitution, self-determination, and liberation.

Considering borders and statelessness, land rights, agriculture, climate, resources, formations for living beyond property, the Summit brings together artists, activists, and thought leaders from across the world who are mounting tactics of land justice, redistribution, reparation, sovereignty, and other reimaginings of the relationships between communities and land.
