Which Power to Occupy?
Contemporary engaged art practices directed at achieving concrete social and political change seem to be confronted with a dual challenge: the first is to occupy power, while the second is to change the very nature through which we understand, organize and practice power. New organizational and infrastructural models proposed through the arts – from Ahmet Ögüt’s Silent University to Tania Bruguera’s Immigrant Movement International – are not merely aimed at occupying an existing party or organizational structure, but are aimed at establishing a form of dual power: to transition power from an existing structure to a radically new one. Now: how do we move from new imaginary forms of power through the arts, to their concrete realization?
