What is the open call, anyway?
The open call invites artists working in all mediums to submit proposals for a new public art commission, to be presented in New York City in the spring/summer of 2019. It is an opportunity for emerging artists to experiment in the public realm, and utilize Creative Time’s 40+ year history of realizing artists’ dream projects.
How does this fit within Creative Time’s mission?
As New York City’s vanguard public art organization, Creative Time has historically worked with artists to produce projects which engender dialogue, encourage debate, and take on the most pressing issues of our time. Often some of the most exciting, impactful, and ambitious ideas come from artists who have not yet been afforded the opportunity to work in public space. The open call format is designed to more broadly hear from artists at a pivotal point in their career, and those ready to develop an idea into a site specific public exhibition.
Who is eligible to apply?
The open call is intended for emerging artists, regardless of age, at a critical career juncture in which the opportunity to experiment and receive resources from a major arts organization would be impactful. Applications can be submitted by single artists or artist collectives that meet the below criteria.
– Artists must have experience conceiving and executing works or projects, but have not yet received a public art commission or substantial support from a major arts institution
– Artists must be over 21, and based in the New York City area
– Applicants cannot be currently enrolled in a degree program
We encourage anyone who considers themselves an emerging artist to apply.
What do you mean by NYC based artist?
For the inaugural year of the Open Call program we are limiting the eligibility for applications to New York City based artists. We will accept applications from artists living in the New York Metropolitan area, as long as they can commit to being physically present in New York City throughout the project production period. In the future, our intention is to expand the regional scope of the Open Call.
What kind of projects are you looking for?
We are accepting proposals for an original, temporary public artwork. We are most interested in ideas that take unconventional exhibition formats, speak to a pressing social issue, and engender public dialogue. There is no secret formula for medium, size, or scale.
How do I apply?
Applications will only be accepted electronically via our Submittable account. Interested applicants will need to register for a free account and complete the online application form. Applicants are asked to include supplemental information, including a resume (2 page max), bio (100 words max), selected works (up to 10 images and 3 videos), and a statement of intent introducing their proposal and interest in creating a public artwork with Creative Time (600 words max). The application window closes at 11:59 PM on January 18, 2019.

Is there an artist fee granted for the selected proposal?
Yes, the selected applicant will receive an artist fee based on the scale of their project.
What is the budget?
The production budget will vary depending on the proposed concept and will not exceed $50,000. In addition, the selected artist will receive an artist fee based on the scope of their project.
The selected artist will be supported by Creative Time’s team in every aspect, including curatorial guidance, project production and fabrication, marketing, audience building, and mentorship.
How will the artist be selected?
All complete applications received by January 18 at 11:59 PM will be reviewed internally by Creative Time. In late January, shortlisted finalists will be invited to submit a more detailed proposal that includes an in-depth concept outline, site parameters, production timeline, sketches or renderings, and budget. Creative Time will provide templates and general guidance for the shortlisted finalists. A selection committee comprised of curators, artists, Creative Time staff, and community members will select the final proposal, which will be announced in February 2019.
When will the selected artist be announced?
The selected project will be announced in February 2019.
How many proposals can I submit? What about collectives? Are they eligible to apply?
Artists are invited to submit a proposal outlining one project only. We welcome applications from existing collectives with a history of making work together. Collectives can submit a single application.
When will the project open to the public?
The project will be presented in the spring/summer of 2019 in New York City, and will be free and open to the public.

Where will the project take place?
The project will be presented in New York City. The specific site will be dependent on the selected proposal. Applicants are welcome to suggest an appropriate site or set of ideal site parameters for their proposal, which will be subject to the review of the selection committee.
