About The Open Call
In December 2018, Creative Time began an open call initiative, which invited emerging artists to propose compelling, cutting edge projects that address a timely social justice issue. In surveying the field, it became clear that often, the same artists were being afforded major commissions. This initiative is one way to complicate that narrative, and work to cultivate and support the next great generation of socially engaged artists working in public space.
From the start, Risa Puno’s proposal for The Privilege of Escape stood out amongst the 632 diligently reviewed applications. Puno shared a true dream project that addressed a pressing social justice issue that needed to be addressed in this moment. Moreover, Puno’s passion, energy, and enthusiasm came through in her proposal, making clear that she was the perfect inaugural artist for the Creative Time Open Call.
