5:30 pm–6:30 pm On Stage—An Exploration in Still Life Movement with Black Painters Academy Join the Black Painters Academy, a new school dedicated to Black art history, for an adult painting class in the still life tradition. Led by artist and founder of the Academy Azikiwe Mohammed, this class will focus on the natural, with lush plant life and fresh cut flowers. Painting supplies will be provided for the first 10 people to arrive, after that people are invited to participate as they see so fit. Class is open to all, but inherent to the mission, Black Painters Academy centers Black people. A 2005 graduate of Bard College, where he studied photography and fine arts, Azikiwe Mohammed received a Rauschenberg Artists Fund Grant in 2021 in support of The Black Painters Academy, a free art school / space for mutual aid he founded in 2020. 7:00 pm–7:45 pm On Stage—The first sky is inside you: A sound experience by sunlove sunlove offers a multi-instrument sound meditation on and around the stage to close the day with intention, rest, and care. The event is free and open to all. There will be accessibility accommodations, including space for wheelchairs and social distancing protocols in place. ASL interpretation provided. sunlove aims to create space to allow for new growth and new pleasures to shine through for resilience and space to flow. It is an invitation to take part in harmonic experiences that unveil a new perspective and experience of the self, and a recognition that the oppression that we face cannot only be fought externally. 10:00 am–10:00 pm On Stage—Echo Location by Sunder Ganglani, Kai Pelton, and Charlotte Brathwaite Echo Location: A shared story of struggle and survival, a public reading, a song of renewal, a multitude of voices, a people’s mic, a collective breath across life-forms and life-times by a loving community. Be present, raise your voice, open your heart. An intimate public reading embraced by song—created by Sunder Ganglani, Kai Pelton, and Charlotte Brathwaite. Over the course of 12 hours, Red Stage will be enlivened by a deep reading of Alexis Pauline Gumb’s Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals, a book that meditates on lessons of marine mammals that are applicable to human survival. Drop in at any time, pick up a book from a Creative Time staff member, and join in. Charlotte Brathwaite began working with La MaMa E.T.C’s Great Jones Repertory Company as an actor at the age of 16 and performed in New York and internationally with the company for over a decade. As a director, she is known for her unique approach to staging classical and unconventional texts, dance, visual art, multi-media, site-specific installation, video, film, performance art, plays, and music events. Named as one of the “up-and-coming women in theatre to watch” by Playbill, her work has been seen in the Americas, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia. With subject matter ranging from the historical past to the distant future, her work offers unique perspectives on form as it illuminates issues of race, sex, power, and the complexities of the human condition. In 2019 Brathwaite received a Creative Capital award, a United States Artist Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Fellowship, a Rockefeller Bellagio residency, and a Map Fund Award. 3:00 pm–4:30 pm COMMENCEMENT: A Procession & Ceremony of Gratitude, Reunion, Celebration and the Closing of School Year led by Tiffany Lenoi Jones On the last day of NYC public schools to celebrate the youth & families who have persevered, to thank educators who have sustained learning, and to reunite school communities who have been distanced during the pandemic, educator Tiffany Lenoi Jones will gather educators, students, and families for a procession & ceremony marking progress, achievement, and new beginnings. Youth participants include Zeke Tishcoff, Ronnie Gibson, Nyla Cepeda, Nico Shields, and Oona Ervin. Tiffany Lenoi Jones is an abolitionist public school art educator, artist, and healer. Teaching and learning is her ultimate art practice. She is committed to the practice of unconditional TLC (tender love and care) to contribute to communities that thrive through the interdependent practice of teaching, learning, change, create, and/or challenge (TLC). |

6:00 pm–7:30 pm On Stage—The People's Platform with Re-Connection Lab by Lacey Dorn As we re-enter the world from isolation, have we forgotten how to connect? Amidst the collective trauma of global lockdowns and social and political turmoil, loneliness prevails. Screens have become our portal to everything: work, friendships, family, entertainment, and even love. In Re-Connection Lab, artist Lacey Dorn will conduct 10-minute human connection workshops. Using the 36 Questions For Closeness Generating, which were empirically proven by psychologist Dr. Arthur Aron to forge a bond between any two strangers, Dorn will allow participants to re-acquaint themselves with the art of establishing human connection. Lacey Dorn is an artist, actor and filmmaker, working in both fine art and cinema. Dorn's experiential performance/video works have been featured in solo and group shows, including at Palais de Tokyo, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Paul Kasmin Gallery and Mana Contemporary Museum. On stage, she stars in Jay Scheib's ongoing live-cinema art performances of “Persona” and “The Silence.” Dorn and Scheib have ongoing collaborations with The MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology, including work with the Computer Science Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab. Narrative films she has directed, written, produced and acted in have screened at festivals, including SXSW, Mill Valley and Cannes. |

4:00 pm–8:00 pm On Stage—Live Arts Pride 2021: THE HOUSE PARTY Performing in The House Party on Astor Place will be the oldest and most revered house in New York’s drag and ballroom scene: Performance Artist, Transgender Advocate, and Poet Linda La with performer and activist The Perfect Poison, and guests; Asian/Pacific/Queer collective of collaborative and creative minds Bubble_T; the uplifting and innovative duo OOPS! with guest friends; queer Brooklyn nightlife staple drag collective Switch n’ Play; RAGGA, a growing network of queer Caribbean artists and allies working across a wide range of disciplines; and Bubble_T member DJ THELIMITDOESNOTEXIST who is originally from Singapore and plays hyperpop club beats. Welcomed by Live Arts Artistic Director Bill T. Jones, these families will express their distinct voices in 30-minute performance sets. THE STONEWALL PROTESTS IS A GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY THAT CENTERS BLACK TRANS EXPERIENCE. Black Trans Liberation aims to end homelessness within the trans population by providing access and resources that empower and celebrate the TGNC community. They’re committed to dismantling the current 35 year life expectancy of Black Trans people and abolishing systemic oppression. The plaza and stage are ADA accessible with a variety of seating. Astor Place plaza is flat with multiple ramped entries, located at each intersection: Lafayette Street and Astor Place; Lafayette and 8th Street; Cooper Square and 8th Street; and Cooper Square and Astor Place. The stage is accessible via an ADA-compliant ramp. The plaza has permanent and temporary seating that is available on a first-come first-serve basis, and our team will provide additional seating as desired. The plaza does not have public restrooms. Nearby public restrooms can be located in Washington Square Park, McKinley Playground, Tompkins Square Park, Union Square Park, or Washington Square Park. Water and snacks will be available. |
