Assistant Curator, Community Engagement

 

Creative Time, New York City’s veteran and vanguard public arts presenter, seeks a full time Assistant Curator to support a new initiative to grow a hub that nurtures a community of politically oriented artists locally, nationally, and around the world. This initiative is born from Creative Time’s experience of nearly 50 years at the intersection of art and social justice. Specifically, this new and expansive grant-funded program takes root in the organization’s lineage of platforming contemporary socially engaged and political art practices across the world through the Creative Time Think Tank, Summit, Reports, and Global Residencies. The ideal candidate will be a community-builder, self-starter, and creative spirit who enjoys quick problem solving, keeping ideas, timelines, and people organized, and is adaptable with a flexible disposition.
 
The Assistant Curator, Community Engagement will work with a dynamic team on the ideation and realization of community engagement strategies, public programs, performances, online content, and printed matter. This involves collaboration with artists, cultural producers, cultural organizers, and a range of organizational partners and thought leaders. The role requires knowledge of activist and socially engaged art and includes project management, administration, curatorial research, written didactic materials, and public speaking engagements. The role reports to the Associate Curator and works collaboratively with the Programming team and Operations team.
 
Curatorial Responsibilities:
● Brings together artists, activists, and community through intentional long-term and responsive programming.
● Updates and implements a strategic community engagement program that builds and nurtures an expansive community embedded in political and collaborative practices with special attention to local engagement.
● Strengthens current relationships with community organizations, artist neighbors, and arts organizations to build and cultivate strong, sustainable relationships within the Lower East Side’s diverse communities. Develop new strategic partnerships to grow the organization’s national and international community of artists and activists.
● Researches current global movements and networks of socially engaged art and the broader field to pinpoint timely and relevant program topics and design.
● Conducts curatorial research on relevant artists, programs, and contemporary and historical social movements globally.
● Alongside Associate Curator, manages relationships and needs for the artist council and various stakeholders. Schedules meetings, tracks notes and actions, facilitates connectivity amongst council members
● With Associate Curator, orchestrates artist fellowships, onboarding, supporting initiatives and needs, and providing administrative support for fellows’ program initiatives.
● Fosters community by facilitating welcoming, accessible programs focused around the exchange of ideas, food, and shared space.
● In collaboration with the Associate Curator and Communications team, builds partnerships with program and media entities to enhance program access and visibility.
● Develops and executes successful programs based on mission-focused activities.
● Represents the organization at relevant public-facing community events and workshops.
● Ability to work nights and weekends as needed, subject to program calendar.
 
Administrative Responsibilities:
● Conduct research in support of curatorial priorities and initiatives
● Handle administrative duties including arranging agreements, travel, payments, and event coordination as needed.
● Maintains and proposes allocations for program budget
● Develops evaluation methods to learn from audience and participant experience and track impact of program initiatives
● Works cross departmentally with communications and programming teams to develop materials to promote and support programs
 
Qualifications and Requirements:
● 2-4 years work experience in a similar capacity. Direct experience designing programs for 50+ people from concept to delivery
● Knowledgeable and deeply committed to socially engaged art, public art, and community engagement.
● Commitment to accuracy and detail with the ability to maintain a calm and composed presence through fast-paced work days; Comfortable working independently and collaboratively
● The ability to exercise keen judgment and discretion with artists, board members, donors, partners and the public.
● Excellent writing skills, proven grasp of grammar and expression
● Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, Dropbox, and Google Workspace
● Spanish language fluency is a plus.
 
Salary:
$58,500-65,000 based on qualifications and experience.
This is a three-year, full-time exempt position that is grant funded. A comprehensive benefits package is available (includes Paid Time Off, Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance, a 403B plan, and more). As it is grant-funded, the duration is limited to the length of the funding period.

Fellowships

The Leonhardt Cassullo Video Fellowship is central to Creative Time’s communication and programming efforts, helping us document our over forty-year history, and allowing Creative Time’s ephemeral, public artworks to be experienced by audiences beyond those that can see in person.
